History

Five years after Dr. John Jones founded St. Lambert’s Champlain College (Cegep) Men’s Rugby Team in 1979, two former star players, Steve Ackle and Barry Sullivan, approached Coach Jones suggesting the formation of a Men’s Senior Rugby Team to enter the Federation Rugby du Quebec’s Senior Men’s Competition. These three “founding fathers” compiled a team mostly of old Champlainers, who due to their youth and inexperience entered the 2nd Division Quebec League. With Jones as President, Ackle and Sullivan as Captains and Gerry Brennan as Coach, they launched the “St. Lambert ‘Locks’” in February, 1984. Not only did they win their first game against arch-rival St. Anne de Bellevue, but they went on to become 2nd Division League Champions in their first year of existence, a feat they repeated in 1986.

Many successes followed these simple beginnings. Graduating to the F.R.Q.’s Men’s 1st Division in 1990, the “Locks” went on to become Quebec 7’s Champions in 1992, 1993 and 1994. In the latter year, they won the New York Sevens Club Championship and garnered two M.V.P. Awards. Two more watershed years followed, with the “Locks” winning the EORU/QRU Hart League Championship in 1995. In 1996 and again in 2000, the “Locks” Senior Men’s Rugby team were the Quebec Cup Champions. “Locks” twins Albert and Louis Subirana were invited on to the Canadian National Squad where they spent time in B.C., and played representatively. Other honours: 1992-3rd Division League Champions; 2006-Florida Competition, Old Boys Champions. The women’s team, found in 1995, were Women’s N.Y. Sevens Bowl Champions in 1997; Quebec 2nd Consolation Champions in 2002 and Quebec Cup winners in 2005.

Geographically located in the immediate area of the St. Lawrence Seaway’s Headquarters, the Club is named after the Seaway’s pivotal St. Lambert “Lock”, proximate to their traditional Seaway Park Rugby field. It is, of course, a double entente on the name of Rugby’s second-row forward position. Drawing on players from all over the South Shore and beyond, our Club welcomes you to join us for practices on the north end of Seaway Park, near Champlain College in spring, summer and autumn from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Our current President is Steve Sheets. Please call him at (514)884-2548 (cell) or John Jones (450) 671-1761 (home). Our traditional “Champlain ‘Locks’” colours are a mix of Oxford and Cambridge blues and our location overlooks splendid views of Montreal.
